Bookies roulette machines first arrived in the UK in March 2004 when bookmakers were granted licences for Fixed Odds Betting Terminals.
FOBT's are electronic gaming machines limited to a maximum of £500 payout per event. Each event is promised to be completely random irrespective of numbers covered or amounts already paid out, and the result of each event is decided by a Random Number Generator.
Such are the profits generated by bookies roulette machines, just about all bookmakers have stocked their premises to the limit of the licensing restrictions and promotion of them is at the forefront of all the major chains.
Popular belief among many players and ex-players is that bookies roulette machines are not entirely random, especially to larger stakes. Something that is repeatedly mentioned is the 'near-miss' factor that just about every player I've ever spoken too has witnessed. When playing a particular number to larger stakes, the numbers immediately either side of it on the wheel are reputed to come in an inordinate amount of times. Is this just players talking through their pockets? I'll allow you to decide. But before playing them with any amount money, just watch the emotional rollercoaster that others around you experience when playing them and ask yourself this question - is it really worth it?
